Reinventing Community for the New Normal

Community is at the center of everything we do at Chef. In 2019, Chef engineers and advocates engaged with over 10,000 members of the community through in-person events like ChefConf, meetups and user groups, industry events, and customer meetings. While COVID-19 has taken these in-person events away, the need for person-to-person connection has never been more important.

Our advocacy team has been working hard to create new and different ways of reinventing community connections through an expanded program of online events. This week alone will bring:

  • Tuesday, March 31st from 3:00p to 4p PDT: we kick off Chef’s first global online Meetup! Galen Emery from Chef will be sharing his insights and thoughts on Human Free Pipelines, and how to reliably and efficiently deliver apps through automation. Sign up for the event at our Meetup page. In addition, Chef’s own Mandi Walls shares her tips and tricks for companies looking to move their Meetups and user groups online in her blog post.
  • Every Friday from 11a to 12p PDT: Chef developer advocate Jody Wolfborn hosts a live show with members of the Chef engineering and product teams, sharing what’s new with Chef Infra, Chef Inspec, and Chef Habitat. This community-centered stream shows off some of the team’s favorite tips and tricks, and answers questions in Office Hours Q&A sessions. You can sign up to watch live, or check out past episodes, at twitch.tv/chefsoftware.

If you can’t make either of those, we still have other online options for interaction with the Chef Community:

  • When you don’t have the luxury to ask questions of your office neighbors, the Community Forums and Community Slack provide answers from Chef and community members to help you solve your automation, compliance, and app delivery questions. Community manager benny Vasquez actively monitors the forums and discussions to connect our community with the answers. Find all of our community resources and join the discussion at community.chef.io
  • Our free online ChefConf will take place on June 2nd, 2020. Mandi is working with our speakers to share the talks and demos planned for both Seattle and London to deliver them online. You can sign up for more information and reminders at chefconf.io.

In the coming weeks, we will announce more activities and resources for the Chef community. I’m looking forward to getting back on the road and meeting with you again face to face, but for now, we need to ensure the community gets the answers and resources necessary to keep making progress during an unprecedented tough time. I’d love to hear from you about other ways we can help.

Stay safe and thanks again for being part of this community.
